Must See: ESPN Profiles Scott Hall’s Decline From ‘Razor Ramon’ Stardom to Addiction | Cagepotato

Must See: ESPN Profiles Scott Hall’s Decline From ‘Razor Ramon’ Stardom to Addiction | Cagepotato:

As the WWF’s “Razor Ramon” in the early 1990s, Scott Hall was one of pro-wrestling‘s biggest stars — a Scarface-inspired bad guy known for his ever-present toothpick, gold chains, and hilarious promos. But in recent years, he’s become better known for his personal deterioration, which culminated in an utterly tragic headlining appearance at a Massachusetts wrestling show in April, two days after having a seizure. Though comparisons to Mickey Rourke’s character in The Wrestler are easy to make, the real-life story of Scott Hall is much darker.

Last night, ESPN’s E:60 profiled Scott Hall’s path from wrestling mega-success to his subsequent battles with addiction and his questionable decision to mentor his son Cody to follow in his footsteps. We don’t go near pro-wrestling very often on this site, but I thought this was heart-wrenching stuff, and worth sharing.

Let’s remember Scott in happier times. After the jump: Razor Ramon’s five greatest WWF video vignettes…

Another Disappointing end to a Title Fight

WBC light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins (52-6-2, 32 KOs) lost his title against Chad Dawson (31-1, 18 KOs) on Saturday night at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, California. The bout ended in round two when the 29-year-old Dawson hurled the 46-year-old boxing legend Hopkins to the deck and Hopkins injured a shoulder. Referee Pat Russell ruled there was no foul, therefore the California Commission ruled it a TKO win for Dawson.

It is beyond me that this fight is a TKO, if the thing that ended the fight happened from being thrown to the ground...dislocated shoulder!  The last fight featured a sucker punch by Floyd Mayweather and now this travesty!

Boxing takes another body blow.

I missed this change:

The World Boxing Council on Thursday ruled that Chad Dawson did not defeat light-heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins by technical knockout, as officials working the Saturday fight at Staples Center ruled.

Instead, the WBC ruled the outcome was a technical draw, allowing Hopkins, 46, to keep his belt.

"I'm obviously thrilled by that decision," Hopkins' promoter,Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions, said. "It's the right decision. Bernard Hopkins did not lose that fight."

Dawson was deemed the winner after Hopkins fell to the canvas and separated his left shoulder in the second round of their title fight. With Hopkins unable to continue, referee Pat Russell ruled Dawson the winner.

Schaefer has already appealed the outcome to the California State Athletic Commission, and commission executive officer George Dodd said a hearing on the matter is scheduled Dec. 13 in Los Angeles. Changing the Dawson victory to a no-contest is possible.

Boxer Dewey Bozella Arthur Ashe Award winner 2011 ESPYs - ESPN

Boxer Dewey Bozella Arthur Ashe Award winner 2011 ESPYs - ESPN:

It was "The Death House" that saved Dewey. "The Death House" is the nickname for that building at Sing Sing where electrocutions once took place. The electric chair had been removed and a boxing ring was set up over the same space.

Dewey stepped between the ropes. He proved to be a good fighter and eventually became the light heavyweight champ of Sing Sing. A Golden Gloves champ named Lou Del Valle was brought in to fight him. Del Valle would later knock down Roy Jones Jr. when Jones was the best fighter on the planet. Dewey gave Del Valle all he could handle until the fight was stopped on cuts. But that wasn't the point.

Boxing gave Dewey balance. It gave him a sense of release, of discipline and focus. It structured his time. The heavy bag, speed bag and sit-ups led to educational classes that filled Dewey's days as he awaited his appeal. Seven years after his conviction, Dewey got a retrial.

Arturo Gatti's suicidal past revealed - Canada - CBC News

With the kind of punishment Gatti took in his many exciting fights, one wonders if he wasn't another victim of accumulated brain injury.  Hockey and Football Players have lately been the subject of speculation about accumulated brain trauma and untimely deaths.  The brains of a number of them have been donated for study by  neurologists whose conclusions include, "...the long-term effects of concussions, using words like "depression" and "early onset of dementia."

What is different from thier injuries and the repeated battering Arturo and other exciting fighters like him endure in order to get a win?

Concussions:

Contrary to popular belief, a concussion is not a bruise to the brain caused by hitting a hard surface. Indeed, no physical swelling or bleeding is usually seen on radiological scans. The injury generally occurs when the head either accelerates rapidly and then is stopped, or is spun rapidly.

This violent shaking causes the brain cells to become depolarized and fire all their neurotransmitters at once in an unhealthy cascade, flooding the brain with chemicals and deadening certain receptors linked to learning and memory. The results often include confusion, blurred vision, memory loss, nausea and, sometimes, unconsciousness.

Neurologists say once a person suffers a concussion, he is as much as four times more likely to sustain a second one. Moreover, after several concussions, it takes less of a blow to cause the injury and requires more time to recover.

Those who had had concussions reported more problems with memory, concentration, speech impediments, headaches and other neurological problems than those who had not, the survey found.

Several doctors testified to links they have found between sports head trauma and later cognitive degeneration. Dr. Ann McKee, who has studied the brains of football players after death, testified that she believed the connection was clear and called for immediate changes to the game and concussion treatment.

In July 2010, the N.F.L. asserted greater risks of head injury and toughened warnings by producing a poster that bluntly alerts its players to the long-term effects of concussions, using words like "depression" and "early onset of dementia."

Arturo Gatti's suicidal past revealed - Canada - CBC News:

"Several friends of the former boxer, who was nicknamed Thunder, say Gatti partied as hard as he fought inside the ring and lived a troubled life long before his death.

"He lived in go-go bars," said Costa. "His life had no structure whatsoever. He would get up, he would say his breakfast was three Percocets and then he would go to these bars."

Gatti had overdosed on painkillers, engaged in numerous brawls with strangers and had run-ins with police. He was arrested for driving under the influence in three states and his driver's licence was cancelled for 10 years."

Nonito KO's Montiel -Complete Fight- - YouTube: ""
Because we don't get cable TV anymore, I miss all the fights and see them later on You Tube. This fight is well-filmed and is a clear example of some "funny things" happening to the human brain when it gets concussed by punch. Left hooks aren't supposed to get there first, but Donaire lands a huge left hook over the right hand of Montiel - who was called one the the top pound for pound fighters in the World.

This interview is in Spanish and Oscar seems more relaxed. He speaks flawless English and his Spanish sounds o.k. to me - I don't speak the language so my opinion is based on a guess.

Too much money and fame can be a bad thing.  Oscar's image was of a very straight person with lots of disciplined living so its a surprise to see him get  caught up in substance abuse.
