Science Behind the Hook

November 26, 2015
USATSI_8943394_2798981_lowres
Joe Camporeale/USA Today Sports

WHEN executed effectively, the hook is one of the hardest punches that you can throw.
Performed with a bent arm and a rapid rotation of the hips and core, this punch is preferred by many fighters when fighting at close range.
This article will explain the reasons why this punch is so effective, and show you some strength and conditioning moves to help you develop that devastating hook.
Science Behind the Hook
A good hook shot is thrown well within the mid-range, and connects before full elbow extension. We showed you in the Science behind Golovkin that this type of action enables a boxer to capitalise on the mechanics of muscle function to create force both during the punch and then on impact.
A scientific study published in 2011 by researchers at Liverpool John Moores University demonstrated that both lead hooks and reverse hooks generated much faster peak hand speed than jabs or crosses.
Hand speed is greater during the hook punch due to different kinematics and punch trajectory.  Jab and cross punches are thrown straight utilising elbow extension, while the hook sweeps round and up, creating more rotation from the core, flexion and adduction of the shoulder as well as creating an extended acceleration path – this could mean a greater end point speed.
Furthermore, there is a greater counter-movement prior to the hook punch being performed.
This suggests that there is an increased pre-stretch and rotation from the core during a hook punch, contributing to faster hand speeds.
Faster Hand Speed but Slower to Perform
Due to the prior countermovement and the trajectory in which it is thrown, it takes a longer time to land a hook (477 ± 203 ms) than it does to perform a cross or a jab punch (357 ± 178 ms).
This means that although a hook is a useful tool, your opponent has a longer time to react and evade the punch. Meaning that the hook should be used effectively – often within range during combination and counter-punching.
When used appropriately, the faster hand speed and the optimal muscle length to produce force during a hook makes this a truly devastating punch.

Just like Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez showed against Miguel Cotto on Saturday night.
Look out for our article on FRIDAY where we will be showing you strength and conditioning exercises to improve the hook punch.

Bob Foster, Whose Left Hook Decimated All but the Heavyweights, Dies at 76

Bob Foster, Whose Left Hook Decimated All but the Heavyweights, Dies at 76

By RICHARD GOLDSTEINNOV. 22, 2015

Bob Foster, a devastating puncher who was one of boxing’s most dominant light-heavyweight champions but failed in his quest to capture a heavyweight title when he was knocked out by Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali, died on Saturday in Albuquerque. He was 76.

Foster’s death was confirmed by his son Nelson Smith, who said Foster had been in failing health.

Foster won the World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association light-heavyweight titles in May 1968 with a fourth-round knockout of Dick Tiger of Nigeria, who had previously been the middleweight champion as well.

The bout, at Madison Square Garden, was the first time that Tiger had been knocked out.

Foster, who had one of boxing’s most devastating left hooks, was unbeaten in 14 title defenses before retiring for the first time, in September 1974.

Fighting in a division with an upper limit of 175 pounds, Foster was unusually tall, at 6 feet 3 ½ inches, though slender, and he had long arms.

“It’s just timing and leverage,” he once said in accounting for his fearsome left hook.

The New York Times sports columnist Red Smith once wrote that Foster “was built like a fly rod with ears.”

Foster won 56 bouts (46 by knockout), lost eight and fought one draw and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990.

But he could not make a successful leap to the heavyweight division, which offered the biggest purses.

He was knocked out in the second round by Frazier in November 1970, seeking his W.B.C. and W.B.A. crowns, and by Ali in the eighth round in November 1972 for what was billed as the vacant North American Boxing Federation title.

The Foster-Ali fight ended after Foster, outweighed by 221 ¼ pounds to 180, had been knocked down for the seventh time. But Foster bloodied Ali’s face, which nobody had done in Ali’s pro career.

Foster raised a purple bruise under Ali’s left eye and cut him over his left eyebrow with a left jab.

Nevertheless, Ali’s left jabs kept Foster from unleashing his left hook.

“A man in the 220s is not supposed to have hands that fast,” Foster said after the bout. “I’m a believer.”

Bobby Wayne Foster was born on Dec. 15, 1938, in Borger, Tex., and his family moved to Albuquerque when he was a child.

He began boxing in the Golden Gloves at 13, played football in high school, and then joined the Air Force and fought in service bouts. He fought as an amateur afterward and then turned pro in 1961.

Foster became engulfed in South Africa’s apartheid drama in December 1973 when he defended his title in Johannesburg against the South African Pierre Fourie in what was described as the country’s first professional interracial boxing match.

Foster was mobbed by joyful black South Africans when he arrived at the airport.

But asked about apartheid before the fight, which came days after Arthur Ashe was defeated by Jimmy Connors in South Africa’s first interracial men’s tennis championship event, he stayed away from the issue.

Ashe had said that “being the first black here was just as important as winning the title.”

But Foster said: “I’m here to keep my title; I’m not here for politics. Ashe is more politically motivated than I am. That’s just the way things are.”

Foster, who got $200,000 for the fight, his biggest payday at the time, and had previously won a decision over Fourie in Albuquerque, was victorious by decision again.

Foster, who was stripped of his W.B.A. title for a time in a dispute over whom he should defend it against, retired after his last unified title defense when, as the champion, he was awarded the victory in a draw with Jorge Victor Ahumada of Argentina in June 1974. But he returned to the ring a year later, winning five fights as a heavyweight and retiring in 1978 after being stopped in his final two fights.

Foster was a sergeant in the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department in the Albuquerque area for many years.

In addition to his son Nelson Smith, his survivors include his wife, Rose; his sons Bobby Jr. and Tony Foster; and his daughters Mildred Foster and Yolanda James.

Foster fought a long-running, and losing, battle to gain weight so he would have a better chance against the heavyweights, and he tried drinking beer to do it.

While training in Spring Valley, N.Y., in January 1969, he recalled how he had worked in a hot bomb-manufacturing factory in York, Pa., in 1966 and drank beer at lunchtime and at night to put on weight.

“After a year of all that drinking and all my wife’s soul food, how much do you think I weighed?” he asked. “One hundred eighty-one pounds.”

A version of this article appears in print on November 23, 2015, on page A21 of the New York edition with the headline: Bob Foster, Whose Left Hook Decimated All but the Heavyweights, Is Dead at 76.

Rigondeaux signs with RocNation added to Cotto v Canelo undercard

Guillermo Rigondeaux: I am going to destroy them all
RigondeauxFranciscoPC_Hoganphotos1
Tom Hogan - Hoganphotos/Roc Nation Sports/Golden Boy Promotions

RocNation  will raise hgis profile and viability for big fights.  If Rigondeux had a chance to fight the likes of Leo Santa Cruz, Frampton, Quigg and Nonito Donaire, he would have jumped at the chance to take those fights, but those fighters haven’t been in a hurry to face the tough Cuban fighter because he has a way of not only whipping his opponents but also making them look incredibly bad in the process.

“To the rest of the [super bantamweight champions] out there with belts, beware because I am coming for them,” Rigondeaux said via ESPN.com. “I’m coming for all the belts and I am going to destroy them all. I am the real champion and everyone knows it. If you want to step in the ring with me, to prove it, let’s do it. It’s up to the fans to demand it from their champion to step up and get in the ring with me. They can run, but they can’t hide,” Rigondeaux said.

There was talk of Rigondeaux potentially fighting the much heavier WBO featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko next year in 2016, but that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen though for the time being.

Rigondeaux looks like he will do like Genady Golovkin and dominate his chosen weiht class where there are plenty of good fights to make.

Rigondeaux is targeting the 122lb champions because he’s not happy how he was stripped by the WBA and WBO, and how they’re letting his titles be fought over by the guys that didn’t want to fight him.

Bruce Lee Quotes

'Adapt what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is specifically your own.'

Mistakes are always forgivable, if one has the courage to admit them.

To hell with circumstances; I create opportunities.

A wise man can learn more from a foolish question than a fool can learn from a wise answer.

A goal is not always meant to be reached, it often serves simply as something to aim at.

If you spend too much time thinking about a thing, you'll never get it done.

Notice that the stiffest tree is most easily cracked, while the bamboo or willow survives by bending with the wind.

Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successfull personality and duplicate it.

The key to immortality is first living a life worth remembering.

Adapt what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is specifically your own.

If you love life, don't waste time, for time is what life is made up of.

Chocolatito — the best boxer you are getting to know after two fights on HBO

Roman Gonzalez will finally become a household name among boxing fans on Saturday night.Nicaraguan brawler Roman Gonzalez, better known as "Chocolatito," is unbeaten in 42 professional bouts and is the WBC and The Ring Flyweight champion. He's just 5-foot-3 and competes in the 112-pound division, yet has somehow managed to viciously end 36 fights by way of knockout.

Until recently, Chocolatito was a relative unknown to anyone other than the most dialed-in boxing fans. That's in no small part because Gonzalez has only fought in the United States on three occasions, and hasn't done so since November 2011.

Because of his weight division, the 27-year-old has also never stepped into the ring in front of an internationally televised pay-per-view audience before he
defended his two titles at the Forum in Inglewood against former champion Edgar Sosa. The bout was the co-main event of the Gennady Golovkin vs. Willie Monroe, Jr. fight that will be on HBO.

Top 10 to better reflect the current state of talent. That process was anything but easy, as we endured an exhaustive process of give-and-take before making our decisions.

Here is the new list:
  1. Roman Gonzalez
  2. Andre Ward
  3. Sergey Kovalev
  4. Gennady Golovkin
  5. Guillermo Rigondeaux
  6. Wladimir Klitschko
  7. Terence Crawford
  8. Manny Pacquiao
  9. Shinsuke Yamanaka
  10. Kell Brook

His placement in the pound-for-pound rankings could not have come at a better time for Gonzalez and HBO.

"The work he does in the gym, along with his discipline and focus makes him dangerous," said Gonzalez's trainer, Jose Arnulfo Obando. "The combos he has makes him very powerful for his size."
Each of Gonzalez's last eight fights have ended in a knockout, and only one lasted beyond the seventh round. That included a third-round knockout of Valentin Leon in Gonzalez's home country the last time he stepped into the ring, on Feb. 28.
Gonzalez and his handlers have floated the possibility of moving up to the 118-pound division if it means bigger fights in front of larger audiences. But they caution that they are being very calculated with every decision they make now that Gonzalez is entering what will ultimately amount to the most important phase of his career.
"This is something we've been looking forward to for a very long time," Obando said. "It's a great opportunity, thanks to HBO, and it's a big deal for us."

On a recent weekday at the gym, Chocolatito remained silent and focused for the duration of what amounted to about a two-hour workout. He jumped rope, hit the heavy bag, the speed bag, and worked on tactics with physio Wilmer Hernandez Cruz.

Gonzalez grew up in a boxing family in a poor part of Managua, Nicaragua. He eventually learned a lot about boxing from iconic Nicaraguan boxer Alexis Arguello, a three-time world champion nicknamed El Flaco Explosivo, or "The Explosive Thin Man." Arguello is the one who gave him his glorious nickname, Chocolatito, which means little chocolate. Gonzalez said he and a group of boys would box every two weeks for the prize of eating food they thought to be extravagant, such as rice or spaghetti.
He then debuted in 2005 and has not yet been beaten.
"I've put so much effort into my training, and I'm now getting recognition," Gonzalez said. "It motivates me to work even harder every day and to demonstrate my quality so that I can get opportunities for big fights.
"And hopefully on May 16, they will see the great champion that I am and they can recognize me much more in the U.S."
